In recognition of #EarthDay, we’re highlighting a project that repurposed an abandoned quarry into a vital water resource for Central Indiana—providing additional water storage capacity to ensure reliable and resilient water supply to hundreds of thousands of people. Citizens Reservoir was converted from an 88-acre, 250-foot-deep former limestone quarry into a crucial reservoir addressing water scarcity challenges and offering a storage capacity of 3.5 billion gallons to supplement the existing Geist Reservoir. The largest reservoir constructed in central Indiana's since 1968, Citizens Reservoir plays a critical role in overcoming severe drought conditions that led to mandatory water restrictions in the past. As the geotechnical Engineer of Record, Schnabel played a key role in evaluating design alternatives, resulting in an efficient and cost-effective solution. The project's design elements include a raw water intake, pump station, multiple shafts and tunnels for the intake and pump station, transmission main, access road, and stabilization measures for quarry high-walls and rim, all supported by thorough subsurface investigations, hydrogeological assessments, and engineering designs. Spearheaded by Citizens Energy Group, the project won numerous awards including: - 2022 ASCE, OCEA Honor Award for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement - 2022 ACEC Engineering Excellence Honor Award - 2021 Indy Chamber Monumental Project of the Year - 2020 ASCE (Indiana Section), Project of the Year Award The Citizens Reservoir project took an unused quarry and transformed it into a reservoir that ensures a sufficient water supply to sustain population growth and regional economic development for the next 20 years. #SchnabelEngineering #waterresources
